Joseph A. and Elizabeth McKinnon Mannheim

Today images of my maternal great grandparents and some info about them:
charcoal portrait of Elizabeth McKinnon Mannheim. I have one of her acorn earrings in the image, made into a pendant. I actually have a strong physical resemblance to her which is cool.

Joseph A. Mannheim from his obituary

Elizabeth McKinnon was one of 10 children listed in the family Bible. By 1880  most of them were in Duluth, MN. Their parents are not listed in the Bible but thanks to research by my cousin Patrick Hipp, we know that their parents were Margarette C. McKinnon (1828-at least 1891 when she worked as a stenographer) and James McKinnon, son of Hugh and Catherine McKinnon. Also we know that Margarette McKinnon and all of her 10 children listed below were all born in Nova Scotia Canada, a place many Irish emigrated to from Ireland in search of a better life either in Canada or the US.

The 10 children of Margarette C. and James McKinnon were:

Mary McKinnon b. Sept. 4, 1850  d. June 28, 1926 Duluth, MN, married Neil McKay by 1869 and had two girls in 1870 and 1873

Catherine (or Katherine) McKinnon b. Dec. 27, 1851

(Elizabeth) Lizzie McKinnon b. Dec. 16, 1852 died by Mary 14, 1907 Duluth (my great Grandma Mannheim) more about her later!

Annie McKinnon b. Sept 12, 1855 married a McLaughlin emigrated in 1869 to Duluth.

Jane McKinnon b. July 15, 1857 married an O'Brien had two boys. In 1880 she worked as a dining room girl in a MN restaurant.

Will McKinnon b. July 17, 1859 laborer lived with sister Mary in Duluth 1880

John McKinnon b. Feb. 8, 1861 also a laborer living with sister Mary in 1880. He officially emigrated in 1881. In 1910 he was a lumberjack.

Joseph R. McKinnon b. March 5, 1863 d. March 4, 1930 Duluth.

Vincent McKinnon b. July 16, 1865 worked as bellboy Duluth in 1880 age 12

Joseph McKinnon b. Sept. 4, 1866 also a laborer living with sister Mary in 1880 , married Clara Belleperch 1896 MN, emigrated 1870 to Duluth, in1896 a stenographer.

It's clear that Mary married Neil and helped provide a home and support to her younger siblings into MN.

Elizabeth and Joseph A. Mannheim were married in Duluth, MN on Christmas, Dec. 25, 1878 by J.B.  Gennoin, witnesses were Albert Block and Jennie McKinnon. Interestingly the family Bible does not report it was a Catholic marriage by a priest! Usually you can't get married on a holy day in the Catholic Church.

From their marriage came seven children:
Margarette Frances Mannheim b. Oct. 20 ,1879 d. Aug. 14, 1880
(Joseph) Edward "Ed" Mannheim b. June 20 1881 d. Sept. 28, 1940
Mary Elizabeth Mannheim b. Aug. 18, 1883 d 1897, kicked in head by horse as a child
Mathias "Matt" Randall Mannheim b. June 11, 1886 d. 1930
Ronald August Mannheim b. March 18, 1888 d. Feb. 15, 1917
Rosalia Jane Mannheim b. Oct. 8, 1892  (my Grandma Hon) d. Jan 16. 1973
Mary Gertrude Mannheim b. Dec. 18, 1894 (later Sr. Gregory) d. July 26, 1966

Joseph A. Mannheim's obit in the Duluth Evening Herald on May 30, 1904 reports that he died of Bright's disease after several weeks at the age of 45. His obit says he was born in Faribault and came to Duluth with his parents in 1868 at about age 10. Duluth was cabins then. He attended public school and learned the bakery trade. He panned for gold in the Yukon (Alaska gold rush 1897-1900). At one time he was a agent for the Burlington road in Duluth. When he died, his son Edward was employed at the city Water and Light Dept. Joseph served on the city council 1890, 1900, 1902. He also served as Register of Deeds in 1885 and on the Democratic Congressional Committee for the 8th Dist. He ran unsuccessfully for State Senate in 1892. He organized the city's first fire dept and served as  the first chief. He was a member of the Eagles, Catholic and non-Catholic Forresters. He was buried from the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart to Calvary Cemetery.

The younger children and his widow had a rough time of it after he died. More on that tomorrow.
